What is the Atlas Digibus?

The Atlas Digibus is a fully equipped Scania bus converted into a mobile classroom, featuring 37 laptops and two teaching stations with internet connectivity. Donated to VUSA through a collaboration with The Atlas Foundation and Cognizant, this innovative classroom-on-wheels supports over 1400 children in Langa with vital academic and digital skills.

IMPACT TO THE LANGA COMMUNITY?

South Africa’s education system is marked by severe inequalities, with many schools facing overcrowding, staff shortages, and limited resources—leading to high dropout rates and perpetuating cycles of poverty. The Atlas Digibus addresses these challenges directly. The program is designed to support Grade 4 learners in their critical transition from mother-tongue instruction to English, an area in which many students previously struggled. This transition has improved since the program's introduction, and assessments show a 20% improvement across all schools involved.

In addition to Grade 4 language support, Grade 5 learners participate in coding lessons integrated into subjects like History and Geography, enhancing their digital and academic skills. Afternoon sessions extend support to after-school learners aged 9-13, with math enrichment through Matific and coding lessons via Code4Kidz.

From Pilot to Lifeline

The Digibus, based at Bishops Diocesan College, travels daily to five primary schools in Langa, each benefiting from a dedicated day of learning. Coronation Fund Managers have pledged initial funding for ten years, allowing VUSA to sustain and grow this program. Future plans include using the Atlas Digibus for matriculation support, peer learning, and community workshops for parents, teachers, and young adults, amplifying its reach as an educational and community hub.

With VUSA leading the charge and in partnership with the community schools and Bishops, the Atlas Digibus is a testament to the power of innovation in education, providing a consistent, supportive learning environment that gives Langa’s youth the skills and confidence to shape their futures.
